why use a lens hood
Nowadays, some lenses are standardly offered without a lens hood. So the thing it might not be that important, right?
Wrong! As far as we are concerned, a lens hood is an indispensable part of your photography equipment, especially when it comes to analog camera sets such as SLR photography combinations. Why use a lens hood?
Reason 1
The main reason for using a lens hood is to shield the lens from the effects of unwanted light. An unwanted light effect is, for example, a ‘flare’; this can often be seen as a round spot or cluster of spots, caused by a beam of sunlight shining into the lens at a certain angle. But artificial light or reflections on shiny surfaces can also have adverse effects on your photo if the lens is unprotected. By the way, a flare doesn’t always have to be ugly. It can also give your photo atmosphere, for example a real summer vibe photo where you see how bright the sun is shining at that moment can be very nice.
Reason 2
Another, certainly not unimportant, argument for always using a lens hood is to protect your lens! In particular, impact accidents can be mitigated with this. This is also the reason that lens hoods usually look battered and are the first to break.
Does it matter what type of lens hood you use?
Yes, that certainly makes a difference.
Most lenses have specially designed lens hoods, which are really only suitable for that type of lens. It is important that the hood is not too wide, but also not too narrow. If it sticks out too far, there is a chance that your photo will become unnecessarily darker around the edges (vignetting). And if it is too narrow, it will not give the lens enough shade and the image will be partly overexposed.
As you will understand, it’s all a bit tricky with those lens hoods! We recommend not using universal lens hoods, but to invest in an original hood that goes with your lens.
