What is a teleconverter being used for, and what are the benefits and downsides?
Teleconverters, also called extenders or multipliers , extend the focal lenght of your lens.
Een converter wordt vaak in het midden tussen de camera en de lens geplaatst. De mate van vergroting kan variëren; meestal ligt dit ergens tussen de 1.4x en de 2x vergroting. Dat wil dus zeggen, dat als je een 50mm lens hebt (een standaardlens), dat je die met een 2x converter kunt veranderen in een 100mm telelens!
If it is all that simple, why doesn’t everyone use a tele-converter instead of a telephoto lens?
Benefits of a teleconverter:
Het grote voordeel van een teleconverter is de prijs. Het is een relatief goedkope manier om van je lens een telelens te maken zonder dat je daarvoor een hele nieuwe, dure lens hoeft te kopen.
Teleconverter cons:
One of the major disadvantages of using a teleconverter vs. telephoto lens is that the brightness of your lens deteriorates. Assume at least 1 stop, but it can also be more, depending on the magnification. This means that if you use a 2x multiplier on a shot for which you would normally use an aperture of f16, then you need an f8. That’s already a 2 stop difference.
Another important point to mention when it comes to using a multiplier is the loss of image quality in general. This can be due to several factors, such as if the axes of the lens itself and those of the converter are not completely aligned. Or if the lens has a small imperfection, the converter will magnify it further. If the teleconverter is of lesser quality than the lens, this will of course also result in a loss.
